INFECTED

Infected is a fully loopable CG short depicting a virus particle with what appears to be a hidden message inside.

I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for being given the opportunity to work on a project like this during the time the world came to a halt in 2020. I was approached by Denis Shpakov (Framestore employee) to lend a hand in bringing this ambitious project of his come to life – and of course, I had to say yes. The team consisted of Denis, Josh Antonio (DNEG employee at the time), Ethan MacKenzie (classmate at the time in university) and myself.

My contributions included animation, lighting, compositing, colour grading and general feedback on the visual outcome & sound. This was a very rewarding experience for me as I managed to pick up plenty of tips & tricks from two industry professionals, as well as effectively communicate from hundreds of miles away and complete this project without ever having to meet in person. It is also worth noting that during the making of this CG short, every single team member had other obligations going on in their lives, including full-time work and tackling final year university assignments.

A massive thank you goes out to Denis for giving me the chance to help with this project.

COLOUR GRADING

For colour and mood, I was massively inspired by the Chernobyl (2019) 5 episode mini-series directed by Craig Mazin. In my opinion, this mini-series has managed to give a ‘sickening’ feeling through the chosen colour palette to exacerbate the disturbing visuals portraying the events that took place in the Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Pripyat in 1986. Key characteristics include a green tint, yellow highlights and desaturated hues throughout the spectrum.
